IIdeally estate planning should be considered at an early stage and not left too late. The aim should be to:

• preserve the value of your capital during life and on death
• ensure that capital and assets flow from one generation to the next
• pay as little tax as possible
• fully use the various exemptions and reliefs so that your beneficiaries pay less tax

• exempt gifts
• potentially exempt transfers (PETs) i.e. gifts that become exempt after 7 years
• Investment based IHT approaches including loan trusts, discounted gift schemes and AIM portfolios where relevant.
